OMG Addicted.
I have been using a Tumblr blog for random stuff. I think for my Blogger, I will only post custom stories and media rather than re-blog other internet stuff. Create somthing of my own ya'know!

Sleigh Bells
I had a cheat day today courtesy of a band names "Sleigh Bells". I went to a local concert hall named First Avenue and saw them play- drank about 4 beers and had an absolutely wonderful time. Now, as I type this, I feel slightly deaf secondary to the loud music. So be it.
I head a great workout today at Crossfit Minneapolis. It was 21-15-9 Push Press 95lb and C2B. I finished in 7:33 BUT my pullups wern't all perfect so my coach woudln't call it an RX'd workout. Damn. At least I got it in.

CrossFit Graduate

| I am in this pic! |
Last week I finished the "Crossfit Fundamentals Course" at Crossfit Minneapolis. I have had a great time over the previous 3 weeks learning the ways and busting by butt. I am totally sold on the CrossFit mentality and am more than willing to leave my old gym, DVD's, and long distance running aside as I officially enter this new phase of my workout life.
Immediately after finishing the fundamentals course I signed up for the Paleo Challenge @ CrossfitStPaul. This is an annual 5-week challenge to adhere to the Paleo principals. Pre and Post pictures will be judged and the winner gets a free month of Crossfit as and the warm fuzzy feeling of living a Paleo Life. I have started my daily Paleo Food Blog here. and will attempt to post a daily photo of the meals I eat over the course of the next 5 weeks. I am curious about what type of results I can expect as I have already lost 10 lbs (unintended) by simply being on the Paleo Diet after reading this book.

Syndrome X: High Fiber vs High Protein
Yet another article on the benefits of a high-protein diet. This study, which will be printed in the Nutrition Journal compares women with Metabolic Syndrome X, (pre-diabetic & obese) with a low-fat high protein diet vs a low fat high fiber (carbohydrate) diet. These women had a BMI > 27 *(mine is 29 by the way) were recruited by a local newspaper ad (who reads newspapers?) The women selected were placed in one of two diets over a course of 8 weeks. One diet being higher in protein and the other higher in carbs. They had all the body composition tests ordered (DEXA, BMI etc...) pre and post.
The Results:
- people on the high-fiber diets reported less hunger vs high protein
- both diets helped participants lose weight
- no big change in blood pressure (small change in diastolic bp)
- increased insulin sensitivity on both diets
- high protein diet had more weight loss
I appreciate the fact that the researchers are attempting to advance the debate on the best and healthiest way to loose weight. The problem with this study, and which the researchers acknowledged, is that there was a high attrition rate, difficult to measure compliance, and in my opinion the population of Metabolic X women is not easy for adherence on a self-reported study. Finally, the carbohydrate difference between the "high protein" diet and the "high carbohydrate" diet was only 10%. Not enough to see big time changes in only 8 weeks.

CowPooling

My wife has been eating "Paleo" with me for the last 1.5 wks. She tells me she had good results and feels "full." We have been following the Paleo Plan at www.paleoplan.com and thus far the recipes have been quick and simple which is a major positive. The major negative is the cost to purchase the food. My wife went to WholeFoods last week and put down $250 dollars on food! I suppose, if everything is averaged out, that we probably spend much more than $250 bucks over the course of the week on food - in fact if I did a budget I am confident we do.
One of my "attendings" (my boss in the medical ranks) buys a whole cow amongst some of his cow workers from a local farm. The cow is organically fed, free roaming, and theirs. This is called "Cow Pooling" and it is simply a great idea. Two great resources to do this in your local area are:
I think I am going to purchase 25% of a cow on the next "cow run." It sounds perfect for those who follow a PaleoDiet, it helps the local farmer, and it just sounds cool. Now I have to find enough fridge space amongst my old Lean cuisines.
